Secure Crisis Assessment Center

Funding has finally been secured to open a secure psychological crisis assessment center at Sentara RMH! The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) has awarded our locality a grant to support this collaborative project of the City of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Sentara RMH and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community Services Board (CSB).

Law enforcement agencies are the first to be called when people don’t know what to do. Unfortunately, law enforcement officers often don’t know what to do either with folks experiencing significant mental health challenges and abnormal behavior. Based on the models of Bexar County, Texas, Idaho’s 2014 “Behavioral Health Community Crisis Centers Act,” (SB 1352), and Virginia Beach‘s example, the new secure crisis assessment center will serve those with behavioral health issues who come in contact with law enforcement. The center is intended for those with acute or sub-acute behavioral health issues including mania, hallucinations, depression, and substance use issues.
