County commits to reducing incarceration of mentally ill

The Rockingham County board of supervisors has passed a resolution committing to reducing the number of people with mental health challenges who are incarcerated! This resolution demonstrates the commitment of local leaders to decarceration, minimizing contact with the criminal justice system, and to evaluating and reporting on progress toward these goals.

The resolution is based a template provided by the Stepping Up Initiative, a collaboration of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, the National Association of Counties and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation. The Stepping Up Initiative has put together an easy-to-understand checklist for achieving these goals. Check it out here!
